The project was well underway

Apparently, there was going to be a third Mega Man ZX game but the project was ultimately cancelled.

During an Inti Creates Christmas live stream, company president Takuya Aizu and designer Yoshihisa Tsuda revealed the third entry was code-named "ZXC" and that the title was well into its development cycle.

Here's part of the transcript, courtesy of the Mega Man fansite, Rockman Corner:

Aizu: Well, you know, Mr. Tsuda made ZX3's player character, right? He was working on the ZX3 player character and then brought what he had to Mega Man 9's player character. It was in the middle of ZX3's development.

Tsuda: I-is it okay to talk about this topic? Is this a good idea?

Aizu: There is no such thing as a "ZX3" game! [laughing]

Tsuda: Well--

Aizu: Because the right name is ZX "C"!

Tsuda: ...I'm certain the project's code name was "ZXC".

While there was no specific reason provided about the eventual cancellation, according to Aizu - the decision was made by people at Capcom, who now no longer work at the company. Tsuda jokingly added if fans aren't happy to hear this then they should take it up with the Japanese video game company.

"If the fans wanna complain, talk to Capcom!... kidding!"

So, there you go - we almost had a Mega Man ZX3 game. How do you feel knowing this? Leave a comment down below.

To be fair, ZX's story was done. Everything else would have felt tacked on anyways.
I'd much prefer them to finally finish up the X series.

It's a shame... Could have been a great game!

@Einherjar
ZX already felt tacked on especially since it made Zero 4’s ending more or less meaningless, Zero’s sacrifice didn’t really end Weil who probably would have even returned in some form again for ZX3.

This doesn't surprise me. ZX2 was one of the last Megaman games they put out before they decided to cancel every Megaman game possible.

@Einherjar Not really. The 100% ending for ZX2 hints at a bigger plot at the horizon. Perhaps that plot would have provided more hidden lore on how the Legends world came to be thousands of years later.

But yes, if ANY megaman game should hit development it really needs to be the next X game. IMO, I would love for the next X to take inspiration from Metroid Dread and its platforming.

The ZX era (to me) had some of the most fun platforming due to the biometal abilities.

Although there may issues, it was still cool to see that X, Zero, and other robot guardians live on "in a sense".

IMO, I would like Capcom to branch outside of the classic series in their next game.

This is actually very sad news. I would love to see a return to this series.

Really wish Capcom would put these guys to work on Mega Man between Asure Striker Gunvolt and Luminous Striker iX releases…

Looking at my avatar I'm obviously biased, so yes I would buy a ZX3. I really enjoyed the ZX games.

@SalvorHardin Zero's sacrifice ended the civil war between reploids and humans and leading to the species merging efforts found in ZX. Zero's actions very much mattered, it's just that no matter how peaceful times are, you always find someone willing to mess it up because they get drunk on power.

@Curry The "bigger plot" was pretty much explained in Legends:
Since no effort could unite man and machine and stop them from fighting, they created Elysium flooded the planet, wiped out all life and created the "Carbon's" and observed them from there.

@Xiovanni Uhm, no, because X8 ended in an open cliffhanger.
We know how the overarching plot continues but i do think that at least some closure of how Axl is written out of it would be nice.
And "Resurrecting Sigma" was inevitable for the series, as Sigma represents a much bigger underlying problem than just the entity itself: Asimovs Laws clashing with free will and the whole moral rats tail attached to it.
For one side, the Sigma Virus made reploids go against their protocol, for the other side, it liberated their minds.

I have been wanting a ZX sequel for years after that 100% ending for ZX Advent. Capcom, don’t be like Konami and give it to us alongside Legends 3, which Nintendo Power featured in their final issues.

Sadness. ZX games were a great step up in what the gameplay of a Mega Man game could be, being full scale Metroidvanias that nobody ever puts on lists of Metroidvanias worth playing without any significant justification.

Mega Man Legends 3 was recycled into EX Troopers which was quite awesome. I wonder how much of ZXC got recycled into other stuff?

That's the sad news of the day. ZX are the Megaman I enjoyed the most.

If those execs no longer work for Capcom anyway, there's always a change to dust the project off (yes, just like with Legends 3). But it's people in the audience that need to do the "talking" (i.e. civilly expressing that there's a commercially sufficient market for these games); give the fan inside a mic, and all Capcom will hear is a pack of wild dogs.

That said I haven't even played the XZ games yet, but why would I NOT be in the market for another Mega Man game with a female protagonist? Speaking of which, I wonder if anyone at Capcom ever considered a Roll spinoff.

@CactusMan thanks, I forgot about that one. Tron was quite a treat in Namco x Capcom, so it'll be neat to play a whole game dedicated to her.

It was obvious there was plan for third one when you watched the secret ending in ZXA.

Been a fan since MegaMan 2 on the NES, I have never played this ZX games, are those any good?
I liked the original X and enjoy the last one but MegaMan movement animation turns me off alot, call me crazy but to me that was the success of the X series till the PS era

@Einherjar While I would like a continuation of the X series... I personally want to see development of Star Force 4 restarted.

After what I heard about what they were planning with that. I want it sorely.

@MegaVel91 MMBN was way more appealing to me, Star Force was way too easy.

Dang I enjoyed ZX and wanted to see where it would go from there.

@Jokerwolf So what? I loved both of them, especially with Star Force's focus on the story and characters. Star Force 4 saw a descendant of Lan himself being Geo's partner, and them going around being hackers on the run. I want it.

@MegaVel91 I just found star force was more basic mechanically so I didn't enjoy it as much.

Both title are great - you can't really do anything wrong especially when you get six awesome games for just 30$/€

Capcom must really hate the Mega Men franchise to cancel so many game of the franchise.

A third and cancelled game? That's kinda disappointing, I loved both games. The whole needing to transform to get to different areas in the game was so fun. I seriously hope Capcom and Inti team up again for ZXC. Maybe the C stood for Cataclysm…

Any idea as to why it was cancelled?
